The One Thing Beyoncé Says She Tries to Do for 5 Minutes Every Day

Beyoncé's lifestyle is unattainable to most of us. From the clothes she wears to the body she's built, it can seem like the iconic performer is on a plane most of us will never reach. But the Grammy-winning artist—who recently revealed to British Vogue that she wants to "slow down and shed stressful things from [her] life"—is actually just trying to take care of herself like the rest of us. In the ads for her new line of Adidas x Ivy Park gear, Bey muses about her experience in pandemic lockdown this year over a dreamlike visual collage of poppy fields and workout routines. She also shares one concrete detail about how she has chosen to center herself amid a difficult year: by spending five minutes daily by herself in the bath.
"This year, it was the first time in my life I've been so still," she explains in the ad. "When you have nowhere to go, what do you do? I tried to make sure I got five minutes, by myself, in the bath tub every day," she says.
That's right: Queen Bey, busiest boss lady of them all, has been embracing a little self care and thinks we all should do the same. Is it easy for the international superstar and mother of three to carve out a little "me" time? Predictably not. The "Black Is King" performer says it's been "difficult" to stick to her daily routine, brief as it is, because her kids always need her.
But hey, if the hardest working woman in show biz can find some time to herself, that means there's probably hope for the rest of us. Read on for more life lessons from Beyoncé, and for more fun facts on Queen Bey, check out The Secret Origin Story of Beyoncé's Name You Never Knew.
1 Embrace the skin you're in.
Though holding yourself to Beyoncé's personal beauty standards would be a life shattering mistake, she does have some wise words on the subject. "I think it's important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies," Beyoncé told Vogue in 2018. "After the birth of my first child, I believed in the things society said about how my body should look. I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it. Looking back, that was crazy," she said.
2 Take chances.
Beyoncé's career is ever evolving, and that means the superstar is constantly taking chances, tackling new projects, and charting new creative directions. "My mother instilled in me the idea that creativity starts with taking a leap of faith—telling your fears they are not allowed where you are headed," Beyoncé recently said in an interview with Elle. 3 Know your power.
To many, Beyoncé is the very embodiment of empowered womanhood—and according to Bey, this was a quality she cultivated purposefully over time. "The more I mature, the more I understand my value," she said in that same Elle interview. "I realized I had to take control of my work and my legacy because I wanted to be able to speak directly to my fans in an honest way…We all have more power than we realize," she said.
4 Bet on yourself.
Beyoncé's key to success? Betting on herself, no matter the obstacles. "Stepping out is the best thing you can do for self discovery. I know how hard it is to step out and bet on yourself," the singer told the class of 2020 in a YouTube graduation address. "There was a pivotal turning point in my life when I chose to build my own company many years ago. I had to trust that I was ready and that my parents and mentors provided me with the tools I needed to be successful," she added.
