Back in 2008, Jay-Z opened his set for the Glastonbury festival in a rather surprising way. Those who have heard of the festival before probably know that this is an event that had mainly attracted rock fans. When Jay-Z took the stage, he stuck to this tradition and opened his set with Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall.’ However, it wasn’t a tribute; it was actually a mockery of Noel Gallagher.

Unsurprisingly, it all started with Noel Gallagher’s harsh comments. Those who know him know that when it comes to criticizing others, a Gallagher never hesitates. Jay-Z was no exception when he heard that the rapper was headlining this festival. The guitarist claimed that Jay-Z’s show would discourage people from going and said he found it wrong. The Oasis member didn’t like it that a hip-hop musician was headlining an event that used to feature primarily rock musicians.

“Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music,” Noel Gallagher said, hoping to remind everyone of the festival’s origins. “And even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night, you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

Jay-Z chose to begin his performance at Glastonbury with a montage of people criticizing him, including Noel Gallagher. While the video was playing, he shouted that he was the best rapper of all time. The crowd, of course, gave the appropriate response and went wild, singing along when he started his show after the montage had finished playing.

The crowd began shouting Jay- Z’s name after he finished performing ‘Wonderwall.’ “I just have one thing to say,” said the rapper, before launching into ‘99 Troubles,’ “If you’re having girl problems, kid, I feel bad for you/I got 99 problems but a b*tch ain’t one.” The rapper undoubtedly mockingly referred to Noel Gallagher’s remarks and ended up getting the audience wildly involved.

Of course, the video went viral. Even now, it’s circulating on TikTok, so even though it’s been 14 years, Jay-Z’s diss is still being discussed. Anyway, rap music is a genre that is already known for its disses, and Noel Gallagher got his share after his harsh comments on the rapper.
